The Bible teaches that God ordained Human Government as a means of protection and guidance for mankind [Genesis 9:1-7; Romans 13:1-5]. The United States Constitution as established by the Founding Fathers provides for its citizens the guarantees of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. These men devised a Constitutional Republic based on biblical truths and the failures of historical forms of government. This government of the people, by the people and for the people works only when citizens follow biblical mandates. “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers” implies not only obedience but also involvement. “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” implies not only adherence to laws but also commitment to participation. “Honor the King” implies not only proper respect but also proper responsibility. The dual citizenship enjoyed by biblical Christians requires an understanding of our eternal home in Heaven and submission to the Lord Jesus Christ while accepting our temporal home on earth and participation in our God ordained government. Biblical Christians will strive to understand the structure, order and opportunities of Government; to participate in appropriate areas: voting, lobbying, petitioning, supporting candidates or running for office; to obey government in every area that does not contradict biblical teaching and instruction. By understanding a proper relationship and responsibility to government, the Christian will be subject to principalities and powers, obedient to magistrates, and ready for every good work (paraphrased from Titus 1:3). [Matthew 22:21; 1 Peter 2:13-17]
